Livestock Producers Organisation Vision 2030
In January 1998 the founding President of the Republic of Namibia, Dr Sam Nujoma, formulated Vision 2030 as:
“A vision that will take Namibia from the present to the future. A vision that will guide us to make deliberate efforts to improve the quality of life of our people to the level of their counterparts in the developed world by the year 2030”.
Land, as the most precious natural resource in Namibia, is one of the cornerstones to achieving the objectives of Vision 2030 within the framework of successful land use programmes.
With respect to land and agriculture production, the Sub-Vision is:
“that land is used appropriately and equitably, significantly contributing towards food security at household and national levels; and supporting the sustainable and equitable growth of Namibia’s economy, whilst maintaining and improving land capability”.
In terms of the Vision 2030 Policy Framework for long-term National Development, the things to do to achieve the above Vision and Sub-Vision are inter alia:
- to promote the sustainable, equitable and efficient use of natural resources;
- to maximize Namibia’s comparative advantages;
- to reduce inappropriate resource use, practices and
- to create data base for information-sharing and programme management
The Livestock Producers Organization (LPO)
The Livestock Producers Organization (LPO) is a voluntary organization that represents all livestock producers in the commercial farming sector, irrespective of his/her colour, sex, creed or place of origin. The LPO is also affiliated to the Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) as a commodity organization. All members of the LPO are therefore automatically also members of the NAU.
The LPO and Vision 2030
The Government of the Republic of Namibia, through its founding President, Dr Sam Nujoma and His Excellency, President Hifikepunye Pohamba at numerous occasions expressed its policy of dialogue and co-operation between all stakeholders to contribute to the objectives of Vision 2030.
The LPO which is committed to be pro-active and supportive to the policies of Namibia, therefore took up the challenge and in the process would like to foster a smart partnership with the authorities in achieving the objectives of Vision 2030.
In the Vision 2030 document it is also recognized that “…. Namibia’s future will also depend largely on the people themselves; much will depend on our ability and willingness to respond with innovation and commitment to new challenges …” Having recognized the fact that achieving the Vision, the challenge is made to each industry and economic stakeholder to ensure that the Vision is translated into reality. The LPO in its endeavour to define the LPO Vision 2030 is in step with national initiatives and would be one of the first industries to structure a formal long-term action plan to achieve the Vision 2030.
LPO Vision 2030 Planning Process
The Livestock Producers’ Organization of Namibia:
Our mission statement, in line with the mission statements of the MAWF and the NAU: The LPO promotes the production environment for its members in order for them to produce high quality meat under natural conditions, free of any residues etc. The LPO supports the Namibian red meat industry to access and maintain local and premium world markets for their products on a profitable and competitive basis to satisfy both local consumption as well as the export markets, thereby earning foreign currency for Namibia while keeping the balance between production and environment. The LPO represents the most important economic activity in the rural areas and is the most important vehicle towards rural development.
LPO Vision 2030
We see a livestock industry that forms the backbone and catalyst for sustainable wealth creation, turning Namibia into a prosperous and industrialized nation.
Core Purpose
To create sustainable wealth and prosperity through livestock and livestock products in Namibia.
Having defined the LPO’s vision and core purpose, it remains important to establish the collective set of values of the members to ensure that whatever strategies and activities are implemented would not violate basic principles held dear by the individual members. These core values have been defined as:
Core Values
We value:
- Unity, harmony, peace and cooperation within a society built on diversity
- Our fragile environment and ecosystems
- Sustainable wealth and profit to the benefit of all
Any programme or activity of the LPO would be executed in an atmosphere of unity, harmony and peaceful cooperation while at the same time it will not violate the fragile Namibian Environment. Any livestock farming will happen on a sustainable basis, meaning that future generations can enjoy at least the same benefits from Namibia’s natural resources while both farmer/entrepreneur and worker will receive his/her fair reward for his/her labour.
Mission
Our mission is to ensure that all role players in the meat industry act in the best collective interest of each other to the benefit of the Namibian meat industry.
Objective 1
Farmers improve their income/profit derived from livestock and livestock products
Objective 2
Different stakeholders working together in a free market economy to change livestock production in Namibia into a high-income and well-functioning industry.
