Part of the program also included the judgment of farmers’ patents and the introduction of the Meatmaster sheep breed as alternative for the current sheep breeds which are used in Namibia.

Mr van der Merwe mainly spoke about the role of the NAU In organised agriculture and the importance of the contribution of the NAU to this sector. He furthermore pointed out the challenges faced by the NAU due to the changing economic- and socio-economic environment. He is confident that the NAU will be able to face the challenges as they have the necessary leadership on all levels and are very well organised.

Elephant project launched
The North West (NW) Elephant report was officially launched by the Minister of Environment and Tourism, Honourable Minister Nandi-Ndaitwah on Friday, March 5, 2010. Agriculture appreciates the Minister’s presence and approachability. The Minister invites producer organisation to stay in contact with the Ministry and to negotiate with regard to the human-wildlife-conflict. Producers, however, are cautioned that without exact data, it will be a difficult task to take proper and informed decisions.

Minister Nandi-Ndaitwah also mentioned that the report now functions within the framework of the human-wildlife policy and also the fact that the conflict does not exist within a vacuum and must be handled. Within the policy provision is made specifically for individuals and groups to develop mechanisms for implementation.

The Ministry will again make a survey of the NW elephant population in 2010 and will thus reconstruct the data basis. In conclusion the Minister thanked the agricultural unions (Joint Presidency Committee) for their initiative which led to the report and that it now will be made available to the public.

The report is in form of a CD available at Mrs Annatjie du Preez from the NAU office.
