Experts talk about economy and farming in Africa
The Kaiserstraat Farmers Association had two experts from South Africa on Thursday, January 28, 2010 who spoke about farming possibilities in Africa and the economy. The well known economist Dawie Roodt highlighted 5 points which are indispensable for economic growth in any country. These five points are an established democracy, respect for private property, an independent media, an independent juridical system and an independent central bank. The challenges for Namibia are to comply with these requirements in order to ensure economic growth.
Furthermore he pointed out that the recovery after the recession will take much longer as originally believed even though the economy initially will grow fast for the next year or two. The reason for this is the big saving packages which governments made available as well as the capital investment in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. South Africa constitutes 25% of the economy on the African continent, but Africa only contributes 2% towards the world economy. Against this background South Africa and Africa is completely dependant on world powers outside its control.
Mr Waldimar Pelser, the news editor of the Beeld gave an interesting talk about the possibilities for Southern African farmers in other African countries. AgriSA currently is busy to negotiate with various governments in Africa for the expansion of South African farming activities in these countries. (The Namibia Agricultural Union is not involved herewith). Even though the possibilities are great, Mr Pelser emphasized that political stability and the change of politicians in Africa might play a vital role for the vesting of farming activities in these countries. It is interesting that Africa currently heavily leans on foreigners which include Southern African farmers for food production.
Dare to Care golf day
It is our 10th birthday! Since 2000 Dare to Care golf days were held regularly in order to collect funds for victims of veld fires, farm attacks, flood victims, etc. The agricultural family (Agra, Namib Mills, Feedmaster, Meat Board, Agronomic Board, Meatco and the NAU) who started the fund, decided to host this years’ golf day on Friday, March 19, 2010 in Windhoek. The costs are N$2 500 per team (of 4 players) and great prizes are will be given. After the prize giving a braai will be held and the partners of the golf players are welcome to attend the braai at the cost of N$70 per person. We would like to thank Shoprite who again this year are the main sponsors. Shoprite were the main sponsors at the 2007 golf day which was held in Walvis Bay.
