NAU staff moves to new office
We would like to announce that the NAU staff will move to their new offices during the week February 1 – 5, 2010 and that the telephone- and Internet services will be disconnected for a day or two during this week.
NAU part of Country Team delegation of 2009 CAADP Africa Forum held in Nairobi, Kenya
A growing number of African Governments are increasing their budget allocation to agriculture in line with the Maputo Declaration and pressure amounts to others to follow suit in line with the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) of NEPAD.
The Africa Forum has been in existence since 1998 as a platform between peers on issues in agriculture and rural development. Africa Forums are held annually in an African country and hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture in that country, whilst the organization and financing is a joint effort by the World Bank, the GTZ (Germany) and others like Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). Last year the Africa Forum was hosted by Kenya from 30 November until 4 December 2009 and became a CAADP learning and sharing platform, which will in future be held annually around a theme that is of common and current concern.
The purpose of the CAADP-Africa Forum is to support country-based agriculture development by sharing and learning on progress with diverse agricultural sub-sectors to foster the up-scale of best practices in agriculture across Africa as an input into country driven development of the agricultural and rural sector. Regional Farmer Organisations are crucial players for the CAADP implementation since they represent the voice of the farmer, thus the key actors for agricultural development. During the Forum various options and possibilities of how the link between CAADP and Farmer Organisations might look like was discussed and will be further deliberated on at a national level.
Each Africa Forum Country team is responsible to compile their Country Action Plan, comprising of key priority areas identified together with their respective actions. The Namibian team made presentations on two main priority areas namely, access to credit and improving the animal health status in the Northern Communal areas for export of livestock products. The NAU was represented by the Manager Research and Development, Ms. Smith.
The Namibia Country team will meet again in March to recap deliberations of the 13th CAADP Africa Forum and to finalize the country team agenda confirming the various drivers, priority areas, actions and deadlines for progress reports.
Agra news
In the light of Namibia’s more competitive business environment and the ever-changing circumstances in the market, Agra’s board, management and advisors reviewed Agra’s original aims and Agra decided to adapt its business form.
Agra started the process to convert from a Cooperative to a public company. Information was sent to Agra members with consent letters. In order to continue, two thirds of Agra members must consent to this conversion. A public company as business form is important for the growth of value. The value of members’ shares will improve and Agra’s conversion from a Cooperative to a company will ensure Agra’s survival in a changing business environment.
Agra will hold the following countrywide information meetings at the beginning of February and all Agra members are invited to attend these meetings:
