Small Stock Ear Tags in perspective

The Meat Board receives numerous enquiries and comments regarding the new ear tag system for small stock destined for export to the RSA and would therefore like to put the matter into perspective for producers:

During negotiations with the RSA it was made clear that they required individual identification of small stock in order to ensure traceability of animals that are being imported to the RSA. This request originated after the RSA was of the opinion that Namibian small stock was the reason for the wide spread occurrence of Brucella mellitensis in the RSA. Namibia only exports sheep originating from farms that are free from Brucella mellitensis, but without unique traceability, this process is questioned.

Meatco has introduced their Meatco Fixed Price Slaughter Contract (FPSC) in an attempt to secure consistent throughput for the Windhoek Abattoir. This means that the producers sign a legal binding contract to offer a certain amount of slaughter animals to Meatco at a fixed price at a set point of time.

No buffalos in commercial area allowed
Following a request of a well-known private nature game reserve, the Minister of Agriculture, Water & Forestry has decided not to give consent that buffalos are allowed there. Buffalo are the carriers of inter alia Foot-and-Mouth disease, although the buffalos of the Waterberg Plateau Park are classified as so-called disease free buffalos.

Groundnut Association will hold member meeting and information day

The Groundnut Association of Namibia is holding a member meeting and information day on September 14 at Summerdown. The member meeting starts at 09:00 and the information day at 10:30. NAU/LPO Congresses

The LPO Congress will be held on October 10, 2017 under the theme “Role of the Livestock Industry”. Guest speaker is Dr John Purchase from South Africa. The NAU Congress is held on October 11, 2017 under the theme “Agriculture: The role of the Private Sector in NDP5” and keynote speaker is Honourable Minister Tom Alweendo. Both Congresses will be held at the Safari Hotel and Conference Centre, Windhoek.
